Italy Passport Rules for UK Travellers

Travelling to Italy? You do not usually need 6 months on your passport. Italy follows the Schengen passport rules instead: your passport should be less than 10 years old on arrival and have at least 3 months remaining after you leave the Schengen area.

Italy passport rules: quick summary

  • Your passport should have a date of issue less than 10 years before the date you arrive.
  • Your passport should have an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you leave the Schengen area.
  • Most UK travellers can usually visit Italy visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Do you need 6 months on your passport for Italy?

No — not usually. The “6 month passport rule” is often mentioned for some non-EU destinations, but Italy follows the Schengen rules instead.

Key point: For Italy, the important checks are:
  • How old your passport is on arrival (the 10-year rule)
  • How much validity is left after your trip (the 3-month rule)

Passport validity requirements for Italy

Italy is part of the Schengen area, so UK travellers need to check both the issue date and the expiry date on their passport. These are two separate checks.

Rule Applies to Italy?
6-month rule No, not usually
10-year rule Yes
3-month rule Yes

The 10-year passport issue rule

Your passport should be less than 10 years old on the day you arrive in Italy. This matters because some older UK passports may still show a later expiry date even though they are too old for Schengen entry.

Example:
  • Passport issue date: 10 April 2016
  • Arrival in Italy: 15 April 2026

This passport would normally not be valid because it is more than 10 years old on arrival.

The 3-month validity rule

Your passport should have at least 3 months remaining after the day you leave the Schengen area. If Italy is your only Schengen destination, that usually means 3 months after the day you leave Italy.

Example:
  • Leaving Italy: 30 September 2026
  • Passport expiry date: 20 December 2026

This is close to the limit, so you should always leave a comfortable margin before travelling.

Good to know: If you are visiting Italy together with France, Greece or another Schengen country, the 3-month rule is based on when you leave the Schengen area as a whole, not just Italy.

Do UK travellers need a visa for Italy?

Most UK travellers visiting Italy for tourism, family visits, short business trips, short study or similar short stays can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Upcoming change: ETIAS

ETIAS is not required yet. It is expected after wider EU border changes are in place.

  • ETIAS is not a visa
  • It is an online travel authorisation
  • It is not required yet
